Communications Intern

Location: Beijing

The Communications Intern is a paid position responsible for supporting The George Institute China’s internal and external communications, public relations and fundraising activities, event management, and engaging the community in key research projects conducted by TGI China. The Communications Intern will work with George Institute staff at all levels.   The incumbent will gain valuable experience in working on a multicultural and bilingual team, located in Beijing and Sydney, across a variety of projects in the Marketing and Communications department.

Key Accountabilities:

Stakeholder engagement

  • Provide assistance to Institute staff in writing speeches, preparing letters and drafting articles for distribution to key stakeholders
  • Assist with the translation of marketing and other material from English into Chinese or vice versa, as needed
  • Maintain and update the stakeholder database regularly

Event Management

  • Support the planning, coordinating and organization of the Annual Chronic Disease Forum and Health Policy Roundtable event
  • Assist the Communications team by organizing travel arrangements including flights, hotel bookings, activities, etc. for events
  • Liaise with local business to generate banners, boards, brochures, name tags, stationary and any other marketing materials in relation to events
  • Logistic support during the event including set up, guest relations, meals, activities, etc.
  • Assist with media relations at events

Website

  • By working with internal R&D members and the Sydney Communication team explore and develop suitable messages for the China section of the website
  • Assist with the translation of website material from English into Chinese

Media and Disseminations

  • Work with various media outlets on media reports covering the work of The George Institute China
  • Maintain and update the media database regularly.
  • Support the creation of a range of corporate communications tools (for a variety of mediums) to promote The George Institute China work to a range of audiences – materials including newsletters, fact sheets, invitations, research brochures

Other public relations type of responsibilities

  • Working with head office (located in Sydney) to provide support on fundraising initiatives in China
  • Working with the Sydney Communications team, provide relevant examples on request of China projects for dissemination in corporate marketing materials.
  • Other PR and communications related work for The George Institute, China.


Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

Director, Cardiovascular Group

Location: Beijing, China

The George Institute for Global Health, China has a relatively small Cardiovascular Group with a team of 5 full-time staff, 5 part-time affiliates, and students. The Group has a close relationship with our headquarters in Sydney, especially with Professors Anushka Patel and Fiona Turnbull.  Ongoing projects include Clinical Pathway for Acute Coronary Syndrome (CPACS), Let the Guidelines Guide the Practice (LEADING)--- A pilot study to evaluate the effects of adding guideline-based lipid treatment information to  blood test reports on physician and patient knowledge and behaviour, and China Clinical Control of Dyslipidemia (CCCD).

Role Purpose
To manage and oversee the operation and development of the cardiovascular group. The director will also host responsibilities as a Senior Research Fellow.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide coordination, management and leadership to The Cardiovascular Group
  • Undertake operational group planning, including strategic plans as well as contribute to divisional strategic plans
  • Provide leadership in development of translational activities with regard to prevention and control of cardiovascular disease in China
  • Ensure that all Cardiovascular Group objectives are met
  • Develop, manage and coordinate several large-scale research projects (including observational or clinical trials) including collaborative research and development projects
  • Ensure that research and development proposals conducted by The Cardiovascular Group are congruent with world best practice
  • Contribute to local, national and international meetings of relevance to the area of research expertise and develop working partnerships within relevant research networks. Develop and maintain strategic business relationships to promote the Institute and ensure profitable relationships
  • Liaise closely with all partners of The Cardiovascular Group
  • Provide regular up-dates to the Director of R&D Division and the Executive  Director in China
  • Take a leading role and provide high-level direction in the development and conduct of research, and productive outcomes in obtaining research grants
  • Monitor and manage Cardiovascular Group budgets and expense
  • Monitor the costs and effectiveness of research and development activities to optimize resources and maintain professional standards
  • Plan and assess the need for future resource requirements and recruit staff as required. Establish lines of control and delegate responsibilities to staff
  • Regularly monitor and review the performance of direct reports. Ensure that the performance of all staff in The Cardiovascular Group is effectively managed
  • Ensure activities comply with relevant Acts, legal demands and ethical standards
  • Provide guidance for project implementation from beginning to end independently or under supervision of senior investigators
  • Prepare relevant journal publications, reports and other written materials
  • Summarize, present, and publish research findings in peer-reviewed high-impact international and national outlets independently or in a team
  • Lead and participate in institutional capacity building activities such as academic seminars, roundtables, journal clubs etc.
  • Contribute to the organization of important institutional events and activities such as media conferences, conference calls etc.
  • Mentor junior research fellows and research assistants and contribute to institutional development in significant ways

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree in public health, medicine, or related discipline
  • Clinical expertise in management of hypertension, heart disease, or stroke
  • Substantial experience in epidemiology, population health, clinical, and/or health services research
  • Experience in preparing grant applications and demonstrated success in the procurement of funding
  • Experience in managing a large program/project from start up to completion
  • Experience in the publication and dissemination of journal publications, reports and other written materials
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills with demonstrated experience in leading a research and development function in a research institute, university or related organisation
  • Sound budgeting and business knowledge

Senior Research Fellow

Location: Beijing, China

Health Economics Research Fellow

Location: Beijing, China

The Research Fellow will be responsibile for economic evaluations of current and new studies, evidence synthesis, economic modelling studies, and health outcomes research, all linked to informing health care and policy decision making. There will also be opportunities for the Research Fellow to be involved with other research and activities conducted in the R&D Division at The George Institute for Global Health, China. There is potential for this role to grow into a leader in economic evaluations of healthcare programs in China.

Key Accountabilities (focusing on economic evaluations):

  • Have a key role in the research development, implementation, and dissemination of relevant current or new studies
  • Co-ordinate and manage preparation and submission of publications.
  • Analyse data and prepare manuscripts that are suitable for publication
  • Assist with the preparation of grant applications as required
  • Ensure that research being conducted is congruent with world best practice in research
  • Development of project protocol, procedures manual, data collection tools and data quality plans with input and support of other staff
  • Organise training and other meetings re data collection and conduct of relevant projects
  • Ensure data preservation, backup and associated tasks are achieved
  • Make field trips within China when necessary

Research Fellow

Location: Beijing, China

Diabetes Research (DR) is a newly developed section in The George Institute, China. The key role of the DR team is to support the development and implementation of high quality projects and initiatives in diabetes in China.

The team member will participate in all phases of project development by providing advice on concept development, project management structures, logistics, capacity development activities, potential funding sources, media relations, and strategies for the dissemination of research findings to facilitate uptake into practice. Studies cover the area of epidemiology, prevention, health care and management, treatment and health economy on diabetes.

Key Accountabilities:

Research (reporting to the Senior Research Fellow)

  • Support to the senior research fellow in GI or the senior specialists from professional organizations, in developing study protocols, operation manuals, training programmes, health education materials, data collection tools and quality control plans.
  • Keep routine communications with project implementation team to ensure that the academic support is given timely and key principles are followed accordingly during implementation, including technical training, study participants sampling and randomization, study monitoring, data collection coordination and other technical tasks for the project.
  • Conduct or supervise the data cleaning, working closely with the data manager.
  • Assist or lead the data analysis and the development of reports.

Implementation (reporting to the Project Manager)

  • Provide technical training to the local research team as required
  • Participate in the study monitoring activities when required
  • Responsible for data collection coordination
  • Responsible for study participants randomization and other technical tasks for the project
  • Support to the senior research fellow in GI or the senior specialists from professional organizations, in communicating with project relevant key stakeholders.
  • Other roles required to ensure the successful implementation of study protocols.

Other Responsibilities in Research

  • Master’s or higher degree in clinical medicine/endocrinology/health service management / epidemiology /health economics / statistics / related area, or other relevant postgraduate qualification with specialist experience in these areas.
  • Research background in diabetes management with post-graduate qualifications preferred.
