World Heart Day 2014-Walk to a healthier heart

How much do you know about cardiovascular diseases(CVD)? Have you ever paid attention to your heart health? Do you know that most CVDs can be prevented if you and your families start changing your unhealthy lifestyles and make the right choices? On 29 September, The George Institute for Global Health at Peking University Health Science Center would love to invite you to join our 2014 World Heart Day activity-take a walk at lunch break, a small change on lifestyle can benefit your heart!

World Heart Day is an annual event that takes place on 29 September every year.It is organized by the World Heart Federation aimed at reminding the public about the risk of heart disease and the importance of healthy lifestyles in preventing the disease. This year’s celebrations’ theme focuses on creating heart-healthy environments for live, work and play. By ensuring that people are able to make heart-healthy choices, the event encourages people and their friends and families to reduce the cardiovascular risk.

For those who spend most of their working time sitting at the desks in the office buildings, it is very common to ignore the risk factors, for example, unhealthy diets, inadequate activities and smoking, which are actually affecting their cardiovascular system.

On September 29, 2014, as part of this year’s World Heart Day activities, The George Institute for Global Health at Peking University Health Science Center would like to initiate health promotion event at our office building and encourage people to take a walk during the lunch break. We hope that by making this little change on lifestyle, awareness on heart health can be raised and more people can be involved in not only managing their own cardiovascular disease(CVD) risks but also helping their families and friends to make the right heart choice.

People working in the Horizon Towers and around will be invited to our desk set at the lobby to get information about CVD and how to prevent heart disease and stroke. They will also be encouraged to walk for more physical activity and collect stamps. 4 stamp collection stations will be set around the office tower. Participants who collect 3 stamps will be awarded a salt spoon and an apple.

Professor Anushka Patel, Chief Scientist of the George Institute for Global Health, Professor of Medicine at The University of Sydney and cardiologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, attended this event and introduced CVD risk factors and tips to prevent heart diseases.

Come and join us! Together we can make a heart-healthy environment!
