At the end of January, INTERACT3 was successfully activated across 25 hospitals in China, and 80 patients from 198 screened patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) have been recruited from 16 hospitals since launch of the project in late 2017.

Researchers at The George Institute, Oxford, drew on data from the UK Biobank, a large, population-based study of more than half a million men and women. They found that women who had started their periods before the age of 12 had a 10% greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease than those who had been 13 or older, while those who went through the menopause before the age of 47 had a 33% higher risk of developing heart disease and 42% greater risk of stroke.

As a kick start to the new calendar year, The George Institute, China held a ‘big data analysis in healthcare workshop’ on 2 January 2018.  The aim was to facilitate new ideas and modes of cooperation and development in healthcare arena through open dialogue and sharing of experiences in the application of the new analytics of big data in various fields.  By integrating new and existing data resources, we hope to create opportunities for research to improve the quality and outcomes of healthcare services in China and other countries.  Experts and scholars from a wide range of disciplines covering public health, epidemiology, biomedical engineering and clinical medicine, participated in the workshop.

NSW Minister for Health and Medical Research, The Honourable Brad Hazzard MP, visited The George Institute, China on 7 December with a health and medical delegation led by the Minister in China as part of the NSW-Guangdong Joint Economic Meeting (JEM) on 5 December. The Secretary of NSW Health, Elizabeth Koff, and Special Envoy to China, Dr Jim Harrowell AM also attended.

On 3 November 2017, on the 10th anniversary of the establishment of The George Institute, China (GI China), a symposium entitled ‘Innovations in Research and Health Care’ was successfully held in Beijing, organized by Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC) and UNSW Sydney, with the technical support of GI China.

To celebrate 10 years of The George Institute for Global Health being established in China, the 2017 John Yu Oration celebratory event was hosted by The China-Australia Chamber of Commerce (AustCham) in Beijing on 3 November. Over 130 distinguished guests, including policymakers, members of the health and business sectors, and diplomats, academics and scientists participated.
