This course provides an introduction to the use of economic analysis in evaluating health programs. The course aims to provide participants with understanding of priority setting and the application of cost‐effectiveness. It uses short lectures, case studies and practical class exercises.
Currently in South Africa there are discussions going on at the highest level on the possibilities of introducing a National Health Insurance. This paper will take a political economy stance in examining this issue.
Speaker Kate Brennan is a Rhodes Scholar and doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford where her thesis is on the political economy of World Bank financing for health care. Most recently, she has worked in the office of the Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.
